1932 The Coal Utilisation Board was formed to look after the interests of coal[1], recapturing for the coal industry markets that have been lost to imported oil.
1934 Organised a demonstration in Westminster of several vehicles propelled by fuel derived from British coal[2]:
- Sentinel Waggon Works Ltd
- Gas Light and Coke Co
- National Gas Council demonstrating a vehicle lent by Wandsworth Gas Co and one from Dr Walker of the gas department of Birmingham Corporation
- Chesterfield Tube Co
- Electric Vehicle Committee
- Koela Producer-Gas Plant Co
- Low Temperature Carbonisation Ltd
- Fuel Research Board
- Whitwood Chemical Co

Between 1939 and 1951 it was known as the Coal Utilization Joint Council.
1943 'An official of the Coal Utilisation Board says that the world supply of petrol will run out in the year 2003'[4]
1951 Renamed The Coal Utilization Council
1955 Mr. Eric Bellingham, director-general of the National Coal Utilisation Board.[5]
1972 The Council was wound up with its work being taken over by the Solid Fuel Advisory Service in January 1973.
