1860 David Joy invented a special form of steam hammer. He started in business for himself at the Cleveland Engine Works, Middlesbrough, to manufacture the hammer.

For some years he was continuously engaged in inventing new machinery of various kinds.

1871 The works were closed when the ground was needed for extension of the ship-building yards
