1946 Obituary

CLEMENT GAUKROGER HODGSON, O.B.E., who was elected a Member of the Institution in 1923, was connected with the Sudan Government Railways during almost the whole of his professional career. He was first appointed assistant works manager in 1898 and two years later was promoted to be works manager. After filling the position of locomotive superintendent from 1904 to 1906 he was appointed chief mechanical engineer, and retained this position for fifteen years. His activities during this period included the design of all locomotive and rolling stock, and the construction of steamers. In addition he was in control of the dockyard, harbour plant, and the power-houses.

Since 1921 until his retirement, some twenty years later, he continued to act as consulting engineer to the Sudan Government. Mr. Hodgson was born in 1875 and received his technical education at Rutherford College, Newcastle upon Tyne, and at the Leeds Mechanics Institute, where he took an honours course in steam and mechanics. His apprenticeship was served from 1891 to 1898 with Messrs. Manning Wardle and Company, of Leeds, where he gained experience in the shops and, latterly, in the drawing office.

His death occurred on 10th December 1944.
