1875 The Clark Brake, a chain brake, modified by F. W. Webb was a form of continuous brake ie it would control the whole train, but the system was not fail-safe[1]
1877 The proprietors, Messrs Wilkins and Clark, wrote to The Times pointing out that the Clark vacuum brake and the Clark and Webb vacuum brake had been adopted by the London and North Western Railway and the Somerset and Dorset Railway[2].
