CHRISTOPHER BENJAMIN COLDWELL was born in London on 17th January 1870, and was educated at the London Orphan Asylum, Watford.
He then served an apprenticeship from 1884 to 1891 at the North London Railway Co.'s Works at Bow, and attended evening classes at the BoW and Bromley Institute.
On the completion of his apprenticeship in February 1891, he worked for a few months as a fitter in the works of Easton and Anderson at Erith, and then went as a sea-going engineer with the Royal Mail Steam Packet Co., becoming successively sixth, fifth, fourth, and third engineer.
In April 1898 he was engaged as shift engineer with the Charing Cross and Strand Electricity Supply Corporation.
In August of the following year he went as engineer to the China Mutual Steam Navigation Co., and then in 1901 he was employed as erector and assistant-engineer with the Ashanti Goldfields Corporation in West Africa.
In 1902 he went to India as assistant-engineer and erector for Messrs. Kilburn and Co. at the Delhi Durbar and other works, and in 1904 he became resident engineer at the Calcutta Electric Supply Corporation.
In October of the following year he was appointed superintendent in sole charge of the Lucknow Water Works, which position he held until his death took place from cholera on 27th May 1909, at the age of thirty-nine.
He became an Associate Member of this Institution in 1906.
