1866 He worked with Whitworth and Co, Chorlton Street, Manchester.. He described his unsatisfactory experience of working with Whitworth's to develop his Porter-Allen high speed engine in his Engineering Reminiscences. He had more luck working with Ormerod, Grierson and Co.
He returned to the USA and established his own engine manufacturing business.
