CHARLES MORRIS was born in 1854, and on leaving school was apprenticed in 1872 with Mr. Edward Hayes, steam-launch builder, Stony Stratford, Buckinghamshire.

On the termination of his indentures in 1876 he served for about two years as a mechanical engineer in various workshops in London and Leeds, and in 1878 was engaged as draughtsman and assistant engineer in the Works of Messrs. J. and H. McLaren, engineers, Leeds.

Resigning this post in 1883 he entered the employment of Messrs. John Fowler and Co., Hunslet, Leeds, and shortly afterwards he went to India as superintending engineer in connexion with the firm's business in that country.

In 1889 he became a partner in the firm of Messrs. Jessop and Co., Engineers, Calcutta, and subsequently in 1892 Chairman and Managing Director of Jessop and Co., Ltd.

He retained this position until his death at Highfield Hall, near St. Albans.

He joined this Institution as a Member in 1888.
