CHARLES LOGIN HAIR was born in Ayrshire in 1864.

He was apprenticed in the works of Messrs. Jas. Goodwill and Co. of Ardrossan, from 1880 to 1886.

During the following four years he sailed in several steamships, eventually becoming chief engineer.

He then became foreman at Barrow-in-Furness and other dockyards, representing Messrs. Naval Construction and Armaments Co. and Messrs. Vickers, Sons and Maxim. While at Barrow he attended the local Technical School.

From 1904 to 1906 he was successively chief engineer of the M.R. turbine S.S. "Manxman," foreman for Messrs Scott and Co., Greenock, and for Messrs. Vickers, Sons and Maxim.

He then went to Peru as chief engineer of the "Almirante Grau," a cruiser built by Vickers for the Peruvian Government.

In 1909 he was made Chief Inspector of Machinery for the Peruvian Navy.

During the War he carried out various duties at Messrs. Vickers' Barrow Works in connexion with the production of war material, but in 1920 returned to the service of the Peruvian Government.

He died on 22nd March 1925.

Mr. Hair became a Member of this Institution in 1907.
