Charles Jones (1870- ) M.Inst.C.E., M.I.E.E., Chief electrical engineer of the Metropolitan Railway.
1870 Born in Wolverhampton
1903 Joined the Great Metropolitan Railway Company in London as an Electrical Engineer.
The directors of the company had decided to electrify their London and suburban services. Charles Jones was responsible for designing the main power stations and substations and bringing them into commission.
1906 Appointed Chief Resident Electrical & Mechanical Engineer.
He designed the ‘H’ Class steam engine; the ‘G’ Class was based on a broad specification for its design that he gave to the builders, the Yorkshire Engine Company.
1924 Retired due to ill health but stayed on as a consultant for a further 3 years.
