CHARLES HUBERT LANE was born in 1881 and was educated at Normal College, Swansea, and Lucton School, Herefordshire. He later attended Swansea Technical College, where he gained Science and Art advanced certificates. He served his apprenticeship with Messrs. Baldwins, Ltd., at the iron and steel works, Landore, South Wales, from 1897 to 1902.

Mr. Lane's first appointment, which he held for 9 years, was as draughtsman to the City of Birmingham Gas Department. He was chief draughtsman and subsequently chief assistant engineer and manager, of the Bath Gas Company, from 1912 to 1918. After holding a position as engineer and manager of the Weymouth Gas Company, he was in 1919 made assistant engineer in charge of the drawing office of the Bournemouth Gas and Water Company, a position which he held for three years. He afterwards became engineering assistant to the Jersey Gas Company, where he took full charge of works extensions.

Mr. Lane's last appointment was as district engineer for Messrs. Robert Cort and Son, Ltd., Engineers, Reading, a position which he took up in 1928; he was also engineering representative both for Messrs. Filtrators, Ltd., and for Messrs. Peebles and Company, Ltd., Edinburgh.

He had been an Associate Member of the Institution since 1930, and his death occurred on the 23rd March 1940.
