Charles Henry Rew (c1842-1912)
1912 Died age 70. 'The death has just occurred at after a short illness, Mr. Charles Henry Rew, a member of old Devonshire family and an Exonian. Rew, who was 70 years of age, was articled to the late Mr. Thomas Whittaker, Architect and County Surveyor, of Exeter. He subsequently went the office of the Town Surveyor of Brighton, under the late Mr. W. Lockwood, and was with him when the drainage scheme of that town was carried out. Leaving Brighton, he entered the office of the late Mr. George Edmund Street, R.A., to work on the new Law Courts in Condon, Mr. Streets design just having been selected in competition, for that great pile of public buildings. During that time Mr. Rew also worked on the designs of Christchurch Cathedral, Dublin, the additions to Bristol Cathedral and several wellknown churches. He then practised in London, and in the year 1884 he removed to Berkhampsted. During the remaining 28 years Mr. Rew has designed many local buildings, the School Chapel, the Science School, the School Swimming Baths, besides the Swimming Bath at St. Pauls School, Hammersmith, the Homes of St. Barnabas at Bushey for Hubert Herkomer, R.A., many houses in Berkhampsted and a great deal work in the neighbouring churches, as well as latterly in conjunction with his son, Mr. N. A. Rew, All Saints' Church, Kittsbury. The Dean's Hall and the Junior School are also their joint work, as well as the new Sanatorium at Berkhampsted School, which in course of erection. The late Mr. Rew was Fellow the Royal institute of British Architects, and Past President the Society Civil and Mechanical Engineers. He was a devout churchman, was President the local branch of the English Church Union and a former sidesman at the parish church. Much sympathy is felt for the bereaved family.'[1]
