CHARLES HAMILTON EDEN, O.B.E., died on July 28, 1921, at the age of sixty-six years.
He was the fourth son of the late Canon Eden, Rector of Sedgfield, Co. Durham. Mr. Eden was educated at Haileybury College, and at the College of Physical Science, Newcastle-on-Tyne. Taking up mining engineering as a profession, he held various mining agencies in the counties of Durham, Cumberland, and Northumberland.
In 1890 he went to Swansea as assistant to the late Mr. T. J. Nettell, the then general manager of Messrs. Vivian & Sons, Limited, and on Mr. Nettell's decease was appointed jointly, with his brother, the late Mr. Gerald Eden, to the general management of the various works and collieries of that company.
On the formation of the firm into a limited liability company in 1914, Mr. Eden was appointed managing director and vice-chairman, which post he held until the date of his death in July last.
He was for some time chairman of the Swansea District Board of the Monmouthshire and South Wales Coal Owners' Association, Spelter Association, Copper Trade Association, and also of the section in South Wales of the Chemical Employers' Federation. He rendered most valuable services during the war in connection with the supply of non-ferrous metals, for which he was appointed to the Order of the British Empire. Mr. Eden was a member of the Board of Governors of the recently formed University College, Swansea, in which the metallurgical work is receiving special attention under Professor C. A. Edwards, D.Sc.
Mr. Eden was an original member of the Institute of Metals.
