Burntisland Oil Works

From Graces Guide

1881 Works established to process local shale and manufacture sulphate of ammonia, paraffin scales, lubricating oils, and burning oils.

A wax refinery and candle factory were added later.

1887 The retorts, stills, and other appliances were of the most modern design, including ammonia and ether refrigerators for cooling the paraffin. About 1,000 people were employed in the works.

1891 Installed a Pontifex and Wood refrigerator and coolers which increased yield of paraffin scale to nearly 16 percent[1]
