The company was incorporated in 1845 by an Act to supply Bristol with water. The Engineer was James Simpson. His plan was to supply water from Cold Bath Spring and from various springs in the Mendip Hills.

The 'Barrow Tanks' reservoirs are supplied with spring water from the Mendip Hills by a system of aqueducts constructed c.1850. The include three impressive wrought iron aqueducts over valleys. They are constructed from riveted wrought iron plates, formed into closed ducts of ovoid section and supported by masonry piers. See Bristol Waterworks: Aqueducts.
