1942 Obituary.

For 37 years Surveyor of Seaford. Mr. Boyd Archibald Miller, of Culverden, Bramber-road, Seaford, was buried on Wednesday. Mr Miller who was 81 years of age, died last Friday. The previous evening he was watching bowls match on the Cronch bowling green. He was surveyor to the town from 1893 to 1930.

Mr. Miller was born at Ramsgate and owing the state of his father's health most of his early boyhood winters were spent in the South of France, Belgium, Italy and Switzerland. In 1873, after a year with a private tutor, he went to Cambridge House. Tunbridge Wells and from there to Highgate School.

In 1878 he passed the entrance examination for the School of Practical Engineering at the Crystal Palace and two years later he was articled to the engineer of the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway, Harbour Works, Newhaven. and went to live at Seaford. The Harbour Works had been progress for a year, when Mr. Miller became associated with it and over 800 men were employed on the breakwater, the sea walls, new quay, the rebuilding of the entrance piers and the eastern wall extending from the East pier Tide Mills, Bishopstone. Mr. Miller was quickly promoted to set out the sea walls and other places. In 1880, he became a student at the Institution of Civil Engineering later being elected a Fellow, and in 1912 he was elected a Fellow of the Institution of Municipal and County Engineers. He was an examiner at the Civil Engineering School at the Crystal Palace. He was also Fellow of the Faculty of Architects and Surveyors.
