The Birtley Iron Co of Birtley Colliery and Ouston Colliery, Durham

1820 Company established.

A large cylindrical cast iron water tank, one of several made by the Birtley Iron Co in 1877 for the Walka Water Works, is now at 147 Ocean St, Dudley, near Newcastle, NSW. It is assembled from about 120 curved cast iron plates with bolted flanged joints, bound with three wrought iron hoops with cottered joints. An impressive example of foundrywork and blacksmiths' work.[1]

1904 Manager of the foundry department Major Todd passes away at the age of 79.[2]

1914 Colliery owners, engineers and iron founders. Specialities: cast-iron pipes and connections for gas, water, steam or compressed air, engineering castings up to twenty-five tons in weight. [3]
