Birchills Power Station
of the Walsall Corporation.
1895 The first generating plant belonging to the Corporation was opened at a site in Wolverhampton street. The plant consisted of coal-fired boilers supplying steam to Chandler compound engines coupled directly to Parker two-pole dynamos. The initial capacity of the plant was 240 kW with a maximum load of 155 kW.
New equipment was later added and the ultimate generating capacity was 2.6 MW
1914 Work began on a new station to meet increased demand
By 1916 electricity was being generated
1917 The new station was opened at Birchills. The old station was closed.
1922 Extension by installation of a Brush-Ljungstrom turbo-alternator completed the station.
By 1930 the generating capacity was 28 MW.
After Walsall Power Station was commissioned in 1949 it provided steam to this station.
1967 The station closed.
