1893 The Heath brothers, Robert, Sir James and Arthur, formed the Birchenwood Colliery Co. They erected modern coking and byproduct plant.[1]

1925 When trade was severely depressed, the 3 Heath brothers took over the company and operated it at no profit to themselves to ensure employment for the people of Kidsgrove.
