"BERT ALLEN HILL served his apprenticeship in the Newton Abbot and Swindon works of the Great Western Railway between 1901 and 1906, and obtained his theoretical training at the Swindon Technical Institute. After some experience in testing he was employed as a draughtsman in the locomotive department for a further five years. He then entered the White head Torpedo Works, at Weymouth, where he was engaged in a similar capacity until 1917, when he was made superintendent of apprentices with the additional duties of works engineer, finally becoming assistant to the works manager. After acting as a teacher at the Weymouth Engineering School for two years he took up his final appointment in 1924 as resident engineering inspector for the Crown Agents for the Colonies with the charge of a London district, which extended from Norwich to Southampton. Mr. Hill had been an Associate Member of the Institution since 1920. His death occurred on 25th November 1948, at the age of sixty-three."
