Benromach Distillery
Malt whisky distillers, Forres
1898 The distillery was established by Duncan MacCallum, founder of the Glen Nevis Distillery in Campbeltown, in partnership with Frederick William Brickmann, a Leith wine and spirits merchant. It traded as the Benromach Distillery Company, though it was never incorporated. The business was established at an unfavourable moment for the whisky industry. From the beginning and throughout its history the distillery suffered frequent periods of closure and it threatened to become one of Scotland's lost distilleries.
1912 Benromach-Glenlivet Distillery Limited, a company registered in England, was incorporated. The company was dissolved in 1918.
1919 The Benromach Distillery Limited of 25 St Andrew Square, Edinburgh, was incorporated as a private company, with capital of £20,000, to enter into an agreement with J. J. Calder, distiller, 10A George Street, Edinburgh, and to acquire the Benromach Distillery, Forres.[1]
1938 The company went into voluntary liquidation and the undertaking was acquired by Associated Scottish Distilleries Limited
1983 During another period of depression in the whisky industry, the distillery closed again.
1993 The buildings, by now largely stripped of any equipment, were bought by the Elgin firm of Gordon and Macphail. After extensive refurbishment, Benromach re-opened in 1998. After 100 years, the distillery was finally operating on a sustainable basis.
2012 The Benromach Distillery Company Limited was incorporated.
