Benjamin Plummer (1835-1902)
'.... Certainly one of the most familiar figures on the Quayside, Newcastle, is Mr. Benjamin Plummer, the genial secretary of the Newcastle and Gateshead Chamber of Commerce. Born in 1835, Mr. Plummer is the third son of Mr. Robert Plummer. When his school days were over, the youth found employment at the Northumberland Flax Mills, Ouseburn: two years later he was at the Haswell and Ryhope Collieries learning the profession of mining engineer. In 1858 he joined other members of the family as shipbrokers, etc., on the Quayside. Eleven years afterwards he became secretary of the Newcastle and Gateshead Chamber of Commerce in succession to his father. ....'[1]
