c.1803 Born Newcastle upon Tyne[1]

1824 Arrived in Manchester seeking employment; found a job as a turner at Marsden, Walker and Co in Salford, machine makers.

1825 Took job of turner at Sharp, Roberts and Co.

1825 Enrolled at the Manchester Mechanics Institution‎

1843 By the time of the dissolution of the partnership, Fothergill had become foreman.

1845 Decided to leave and then saw an advert which turned out to be from his old employer Richard Roberts who offered a partnership in the Globe Works of Roberts and Dobinson.

1845 Presented with a service of plate by Mr Dean on behalf of 250 operatives of Sharp, Brothers and Company, Atlas Works, Faulkner Street.

c.1845 Birth of son Benjamin D. Fothergill in Manchester

1847 Of Roberts, Fothergill and Dobinson

1847 Founding member of the I Mech E - number 13

c1850 Fothergill retired and the firm became Roberts and Dobinson

1853 Listed as of Roberts, Fothergill and Dobinson and living at 25 Acomb Street, Greenheys. [2]

1853 Appointed to be Superintendent of Machinery at Sydenham Crystal Palace[3]

1856 Vice President of the I Mech E

1860 Birth of daughter Annie

1861 Consulting engineer, living in London, with his wife Anne and daughter Annie[4]

1866 of 27 Cornhill, London, E.C.
