COLONEL BEN HAY MARTINDALE, C.B., late R.E., died at his residence, Weston Lodge, Albury, near Guildford, on the 26th May, 1904, in his eightieth year. The son of Mr. B. Martindale, of Martindale, Westmorland, he was educated at Rugby and the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich.
Having obtained a commission in the Royal Engineers in 1843, he proceeded to Gibraltar, and in 1846 to the Ionian Islands.
In New South Wales, from 1857 to 1861, he became successively Commissioner of Railways, Superintendent of Telegraphs, Commissioner of Roads, and during part of that time Under-Secretary of Public Works to the Colony.
Upon his return to England, he discharged the duties of Superintendent of the Barrack Department in the War Office until 1868, and also served for two years as a member of the Army Sanitary Committee. Colonel Martindale was appointed, in 1873, general manager of the London and St. Katharine’s Docks, and joined the board of directors in 1889. He was also a director of the City of London Electric Lighting Company, and other companies.
He married, in 1848, Mary Elizabeth, daughter of Mr. T. Knocker, of Dover.
Colonel Martindale was elected an Associate of the Institution on the 3rd March, 1857, and was the Author of a Paper on the 'Demolition of the Gallions Basin, Royal Albert Docks,' published in the Proceedings.
