The Metropolitan Sewage Works of Barking

1882 the Royal Commission recommended that the sewage of the metropolis should be purified before being discharged into the river.

1889 The Barking Outfall Works was completed; it treats the whole of the sewage from the north side of the metropolis. The sewage flows into the works by gravity from the Abbey Mills Pumping Station. It was operated by the London County Council
