Baden Powell

From Graces Guide

Rev. Baden Powell (22 August 1796–11 June 1860), physicist and theologian, MA, FRS, FRGS

1820 Appointed as curate of Midhurst, Sussex

1821 Presented with the living of Plumstead, Kent, by his family.

Powell's early experimental work concentrated on radiant heat and the wave theory of light.

1824 Elected a fellow of the Royal Society

1827 Elected Savilian Professor of Geometry at Oxford University when he resigned his living.

Powell's fame rested on his role as commentator on theological issues. He was convinced that innovations in science, such as the evolution theory propounded by Chambers and Charles Darwin, had to be embraced by the elites because they constituted further evidence that nature, as well as society, was governed by iron laws.

1847 Birth of son Warington

1857 Birth of his son Robert

1860 He presided at his last dinner as president of the Royal Astronomical Society Club in March. In May his youngest son, Baden Fletcher was born. He died of bronchitis followed by heart failure on 11 June at his home, 6 Stanhope Street, Hyde Park Gardens, London.
