B. N. Cole, BSc PhD WhSc Fellow, has been Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering in the University of Leeds since 1962; and was formerly Reader in Mechanical Engineering in the University of Birmingham.

Originally apprenticed at Belliss and Morcom Ltd. his first research interests lay in the aero-dynamics of shock tubes and exhaust-pulse scavenging systems. Later interests included stress analysis and metal forming processes; but fluid mechanics has remained a continuing activity, and he was responsible for establishing the Leeds Hydrofoil Programme in 1964. He is a Director of University of Leeds Industrial Services (ULIS) Ltd.
