1898-9 Apprentice at Salford Iron Works, Mather and Platt

1900 South Africa - service as a lieutenant

1901 Returned to Mather and Platt, finally working on coal cutting machinery

1905 Went into business on his own account developing machinery for use in coal cutting.

1905 Associate member I Mech E

1911 Manufacturer of mining machinery[1]

1918 Elected MP for Mossley; there are several portraits of him in the National Portrait Gallery from 1918 onwards[2]

1921 His engineering works were at Hyde[3]

1929 The employees of Mr. Austin Hopkinson, Independent candidate for the Mossley Division Lancashire, and M.P. since 1918, yesterday decided to pay the whole of his election expenses.[4]
