"ARTHUR RAMSBOTTOM whose death occurred on 18th November 1951, was elected a Member of the Institution in 1923. He was born in 1881 and received his education at Salford Technical School and Manchester Municipal College of Technology. He obtained practical training with Messrs. Smith and Coventry, Salford, from 1896 to 1899 and continued during the next three years with Belsize Motors, Ltd., Clayton, Lancashire. He then joined Rolls-Royce, Ltd., Derby, for which firm he was engaged on the design of tools and fixtures until 1909, when he took up a brief appointment as chief tool designer and foreman to the Churchill Machine Tool Co, Pendleton. This was followed by the post of head of the tool drawing office of Crossley Motors, Ltd., Gorton.
In 1916 he received a similar appointment with A. V. Roe and Company, Ltd., and was subsequently made works manager. He remained with the firm until 1920, when he went to Huddersfield to occupy the same position with J. Hopkinson and Company, Ltd. Eight years later he went into practice as a consulting engineer on his own account, continuing in the work until 1936 when he became attached to the Air Ministry as a production officer. His final position, prior to his retirement in 1948, was that of senior production officer."
