ARTHUR JAMES STEVENS, J.P., was born at Cobham, Surrey, on 12th September 1842.
He was educated privately and at Cheltenham College, and in 1860 was articled to Messrs. Barrett, Exall, and Andrews, engineers in Reading.
In 1866 he became a partner in the Uskside Engineering Co., Newport, Mon. From the first the works steadily grew in importance, and in 1883 the firm was converted into a limited company.
During the War Mr. Stevens acted as Vice-Chairman of the local Tribunal, and took an active part in munition manufacture for the Ministry of Munitions. He was the Chairman of the Bench of Magistrates of Newport, having served for almost fifty years, until his retirement last year, and for twenty years was Chairman of the Newport Licensing Authority. He was a keen Volunteer, and formed one of the guard of honour on the occasion of the marriage of King Edward VII in 1863.
He brought out several inventions, notably in connexion with electric winding gears for collieries, briquetting machinery, portable hauling engines, etc.
His death took place at his residence at Newport, on 14th June 1924, in his eighty-second year.
He was a Member of this Institution from 1875 to 1886, rejoining in 1898. He was also a Member of the South Wales Institute of Engineers, of which he was the oldest Member, having joined in 1866, occupying the Presidential Chair during 1894-96.
