ARTHUR HUGHES TWELLS, served his apprenticeship in the shops and drawing office of Messrs. Dunsmuir and Jackson, engineers, of Govan. He was then employed for the next eight years in the marine engine works of various firms on the North East Coast, including Messrs. Earle's Shipbuilding and Engineering Company, Ltd., Hull, where he was an improver, and Messrs. Wigham, Richardson and Company, Ltd., of Newcastle upon Tyne, for whom he was engaged as draughtsman. During this period he was also leading draughtsman to Messrs. Thomas Richardson and Sons, Ltd., of Hartlepool, for three years.
After a brief engagement at the Battersea Electric supply station he was engineer to Messrs. Royles, Ltd., of Irlam, from 1902 to 1915. His next position was at the engineering works Messrs. Ashwell and Nesbit, Ltd., of Leicester, but two years later he began to practice as a consulting engineer and continued in that business at Leicester up to the time of his death, which occurred on 13th March 1946.
Mr. Twells was elected a Member of the Institution in 1923.
