ARCHIBALD CAMPBELL RETTIE, third son of Mr. Middleton Rettie, KC., of Edinburgh, was born on the 14th April, 1873, and educated at George Watson’s College, Edinburgh, and Finsbury Technical College.
He was then apprenticed to Messrs. Thomson, Son and Company, Dundee, and afterwards served a pupilage to Messrs. D. and C. Stevenson, of Edinburgh.
Subsequently he was employed on the doubling of sections of the Highland Railway, and in 1899 acted as Resident Engineer for the contractors on an extension of the Cork, Blackrock and Passage Railway, having charge at the same time of a deep-water coaling-jetty for the Admiralty at Haulbomline Dockyard.
While thus engaged, Mr. Rettie accepted an appointment on the works for the Nile Reservoir at Assuan, and on their completion he became second Resident Engineer in charge of the dam, in which capacity he was acting at the time of his death.
He died at Assuan, after a few days’ illness, on the 11th December, 1904, at the age of 31.
Mr. Rettie was elected an Associate Member of the Institution on the 4th February, 1902.
