ANDREW FORSTER was born on 21st December 1867, at Jarrow, and received his education at the Rutherford College, Newcastle-on-Tyne, this being supplemented during subsequent years by attendance at the technical classes at that College.
He served his apprenticeship in the erecting shops of Messrs. Palmers Shipbuilding and Iron Co., Ltd., Jarrow-on-Tyne, and after the completion of his term in 1887 he served two years as draughtsman with Messrs. Robert Stephenson and Co., of Newcastle-on-Tyne, followed by nearly five years in a similar position with Messrs. Palmer and Co.
In 1894 he became a draughtsman with the Naval Construction and Armaments Co., Ltd., of Barrow-in-Furness, and two years later, in 1896, he was appointed chief draughtsman and manager's assistant with Messrs. J. Samuel White and Co., Ltd., Shipbuilders and Engineers, East Cowes, his position during later years becoming that of Engineering Manager.
He was the inventor of what became known as the "White-Forster" water-tube boiler, as supplied to the British and various foreign Navies, and also of the "White-Forster " automatic feed-water regulator, and the "Dummyless" turbine, oil fuel sprayers, and numerous minor engineering details.
Mr. Forster died suddenly, whilst on a visit to Norway, on 31st January 1926.
He became an Associate Member of this Institution in 1901, and a Member in 1913.
