1889-96 At works of Messrs Eastwood, Swingler and Co, Victoria and Railway Iron Works, Litchurch; final position was as assistant manager of the foundry department.

1896 Draughtsman South Eastern Railway

1896-7 Manager of Pneumatic Cycle Co of Birmingham

1897-9 Engineer and Chief Draughtsman of Phoenix Foundry Co Derby

1900 Works superintendent of Ashwell and Nesbit, of Leicester

1901 Began working independently, both in Britain and abroad, based in Derby

1901 Joined I Mech E as Associate

1903 Advanced to Member of I Mech E

1911 Consulting engineer, employer, widower, living in Sutton Coldfield with his daughter, Marjorie Severn Farnsworth 8, his mother, Mary Jane Farnsworth 59, his brother, Frank Smedley Farnsworth 34, a consulting marine engineer, and his sister-in-law, Sarah Mabel Farnsworth 25[2]
