"ALFRED WEBB, whose untimely death occurred on 19th December 1948, at the early age of thirty-six, was throughout his brief career in the service of the London, Midland and Scottish Railway, both during its independent existence and after its absorption into British Railways. He received his technical education (which extended over eight years, from 1927 to 1935), at the Crewe Technical College and the Manchester Municipal College of Technology.
After serving his time as a pupil under the chief mechanical engineer at the Crewe locomotive works, from 1927 to 1935, he was employed as an improver in the motive power department for the next three years. He then gained experience as running shift and shed foreman at Bangor and for a time was mechanical inspector in the office of the divisional superintendent of operation at Crewe.
After serving for three years as running shed foreman at Preston he received, in 1945, an appointment as acting assistant district locomotive superintendent at Chester. At the end of that year he was transferred from the motive power to the operating department, and in 1946 was appointed assistant to the district traffic manager, Chester. In 1948 he received his final appointment of assistant district traffic manager (operating), Chester. Mr. Webb was elected a Graduate of the Institution in 1935 and was transferred to Associate Membership in 1945."
