1860-6 Worked for John Stewart on various tasks

1870 Obtained the diploma of the Royal School of Naval Architecture "without having attended the course of instruction"

1871 Engaged in the management of steamers, including building and fitting a considerable number

By 1881 he was superintending the steamers of Mr William Watkins of 20 London Street, EC, and of Mr James Watkins of 4 New London Street, EC.

1881 Superintendent of steam shipping, boarding in Greenwich[1]

1881 Superintendent of steam shipping, 3 Royal Hill, Greenwich, became a member of I Mech E[2]
