"ALFRED RANDALL had considerable experience as a colliery engineer and since 1928 up to the time of his death, which occurred in July 1945, had held the position of chief draughtsman and general engineering assistant to the Western Group of Messrs. Amalgamated Anthracite Collieries, Ltd., Carmarthenshire.
He was born in 1889 and served his apprenticeship from 1907 to 1914 with the Rhymney Iron Company, Ltd., of Cardiff, in whose employment he continued as chief draughtsman and engineering assistant for a further three years. He then joined the Royal Air Force and later was employed in the chief electrical engineer's department of the Air Ministry. After a two-years' engagement as chief draughtsman and designer to the engineer in charge of the construction of the Rose Fuel Works, Swansea, he subsequently held appointments as mechanical and constructional engineer to various collieries until he began his long association with the Amalgamated Anthracite Collieries Co. Mr. Randall was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1932."
