Alfred Newham (c1857-1926) of Plummer Roddis

1926 Died age 69. 'The directorate of Messrs. Plummer Roddis, Ltd., the drapery and allied businesses at Bournemouth, with branches at Boscombe and other South Coast resorts has sustained a double loss within a few months by the death which occurred on Wednesday morning of Mr. Alfred Newham at his residence Nunton Lodge, New Church-road, Hove, Sussex, Mr. Newham was chairman of the board of directors which formerly included Mr. J. Millman, managing director of the Bournemouth business, whose death occurred earlier in the year. Like Mr. Millman, Mr. Newham had been active in business to the last, and only a few days before his death paid one of his periodical visits to the local branches. Although a man of advanced years Mr. Newham was as active as any man considerably his junior and appeared to be in his usual good health on his most recent visit to the borough. His connection with the business of Plummer Roddis dates back to the firm's earliest days and his services as its chairman extended over a quarter of a century. He possessed marked gifts an a business man with a personality distinctly out of the ordinary. It is interesting to note that more recently he became a director of the Drapery and General Trust, a combine owning the ordinary general shares of Plummer Roddis. Mr. Newham spent many years of his life at Hastings (where Plummers have a branch), but latterly went to reside at Hove. He leaves a widow, two sons and a daughter.'[1]
