ALFRED LINDLEY PEACE was born on the 18th September, 1837, at Huddersfield, where he was educated.
After serving articles to Mr. R. Shaw, Civil Engineer, of that town, he entered in 1857 the office of Mr. Makin Durham, of Thorne, near Doncaster, to whom he in course of time became Managing Assistant.
On the death of Mr. Durham, in 1882, he was appointed Manager to the Durham Trustees, and, in fact, succeeded to that gentleman’s practice. Mr. Peace acted as Engineer to the Hatfield Chase Level authorities, the Trustees of the River Went, the Reedness and Swinefleet Drainage Commission, and the Selby Dan Drainage Commission; and as Secretary to the Hatfield Chase Warping and Improvement Company.
In addition to those appointments he had a considerable private practice. During the forty years of his residence in Thorne, Mr. Peace filled numerous public offices, being Chairman of the School Board, Churchwarden, a Guardian of the Poor, and a Member of the District Council. He was an active Freemason.
Mr. Peace died at Thorne on the 26th November, 1898.
He was elected an Associate Member on the 2nd February, 1886.
