Phoenix Brewery, Dolphin Lane, Dover

The brewery was said to date from 1740, and was in the hands of the Walker family before being bought by Alfred Leney and James Evenden in 1859. On the latter's death, the following year, Alfred Leney became sole proprietor and 1860 was seen as the date of the firm's establishment, its jubilee being celebrated in 1910.[1]

1896 Alfred Leney and Company Limited was registered, with capital of £50,000, to acquire and extend the business of the same name, brewers in Dover.[2]

1923 Alfred Leney and Co purchased the business of Flint and Co of Canterbury, with the intention to continue brewing at Dover, while the Canterbury premises would be used as a store only.[3]

1926 The company announced that they had come to a working arrangement with Fremlin Brothers of Maidstone that brewing would be concentrated at Maidstone, whereas it would cease in Dover, although some of the company's other functions would continue to be based there.[4]
