Alfred James Hancock was born in 1884, and received his technical education at the Borough Polytechnic. His apprenticeship was served at the Vauxhall Ironworks Co.
He remained with the Company in its various phases until 1929, a period of 25 years, the latter part of which he was General Manager of the entire Works.
Since 1929 he had been Joint Managing Director of Hartwells, Oxford.
He was elected a Member in 1917, and joined the Council in 1924, being elected a Vice-President in 1927 and President during the Session 1935-36.
He accomplished a very large amount of work for the Institution, being a member of several of the active Committees of the Council, and was also closely identified with the Repair Certificate Movement.
He died on 20th February, 1938, at the age of 54.
