"ALFRED HAROLD RYDER received his technical education at the Bootle Technical School from 1890 to 1895, and during the same period served his apprenticeship with the Oceanic Steam Navigation Co and with Messrs. David Rollo and Sons, Ltd., of Liverpool, marine engineers and shipbuilders. From 1896 to 1897 he served at sea and rose from fourth to second engineer.
In the following year he proceeded to Sarawak on his appointment as assistant engineer to the Borneo Company and received rapid promotion to the post of chief engineer, a position he retained until 1909. After acting in the same capacity for the Pahang Consolidated Co in the Malay States for four years, he joined H.M. Forces and served with the Royal Engineers in Arabia. On leaving the Army with the rank of captain in 1919, he went into practice as a consulting engineer in Liverpool and was so engaged to the end of his professional career. Mr. Ryder, whose death in his seventy-second year occurred on 19th April 1946, was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1912 and was transferred to Membership in 1924."
