Professor ALFRED ERNEST SNAPE was born at Manchester on the 25th April, 1881, and died in Cape Town on the 12th October, 1946.
He was educated at Manchester Grammar School and received his scientific training at the Victoria University, Manchester, graduating as BSc. with First Class Honours in Engineering, in 1900, and as M.Sc. in 1905.
After serving a pupilage under Mr. S. S. Platt, M.I.C.E., Borough Engineer, Rochdale, he obtained, in 1903, the appointment of Engineering Assistant under Mr. J. A. Crowther, A.M.I.C.E., Borough Engineer, Southampton.
In 1904 he was appointed an Engineering Assistant under Mr. (later Sir) Maurice Fitzmaurice, Past-President I.C.E., then Chief Engineer to the Lohdon County Council, and was engaged on the Southern outfall sewer, No. 2, and the Southern high-level sewer, No. 2, of the London main drainage.
From 1907 he acted as Resident Engineer on large sewage pumping and treatment works at Norwich, under Mr. A. E. Collins, M.I.C.E., the City Engineer, until 1910, when he was appointed Professor of Civil Engineering at the South African College, Cape Town; which position he held until his death....[more]
