"ALEXANDER MAITLAND spent almost the whole of his professional career in India. He was educated at the Royal Technical College, Glasgow, and served his apprenticeship between 1895 and 1900 with Messrs. R. Napier and Sons, Ltd., and also with the Anderston Foundry Co, in Glasgow. After beginning his connexion with India as marine engineer in ships of the British India Steam Navigation Company, Ltd., he was appointed, in 1902, chief engineer to the Dunbar Cotton Mills, Calcutta, and later acted in the same capacity at that firm's collieries.
From 1910 to 1915 he was inspector and surveyor to the Burma Fire Insurance Association. He was then com missioned in the Indian Army and served with the infantry in Mesopotamia. After a period as inspector of munitions, Indian Ordnance, and as assistant superintendent of an ammunition factory he was again on active service on the Khyber front during the war with Afghanistan. In 1921 he became executive engineer during the construction of the Khyber Railway. On its completion five years later he received an appointment as mechanical engineer under the chief constructional engineer of the North Western Railway at Lahore, with responsibility for the maintenance and running of plant. This position he retained until his return to this country in 1938. Mr. Maitland was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1909 and was transferred to Membership in 1928. His death occurred on 15th March 1948."
