ALEXANDER FLEMING BROWNE was in practice in Westminster as a consulting engineer, specializing in industrial heating and drying installations. He was a native of Northern Ireland, and received his general education at Cookstown Academy. In 1895 he commenced a five years' apprenticeship at the Belfast works of Messrs. Combe Barbour, Ltd., and subsequently entered the drawing office as a junior draughtsman. He joined Messrs. Davidson and Company, Sirocco Works, Belfast, as a draughtsman in 1903, and two years later was appointed assistant engineer at the firm's London office.
During 1915-18 he served in the Anti-Aircraft Corps. He became London representative and technical adviser on heating and drying to Messrs. W. G. C. Hayward and Company, of Twickenham, in 1919 and in 1926 he established his own consulting practice, and in addition acted as representative of a number of engineering firms, including Messrs. William Sisson and Company, Ltd. His work mainly related to Government contracts, chiefly for the Admiralty.
Mr. Browne was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1910 and was transferred to Membership in 1920. His death occurred on 29th September 1945 at the age of sixty-seven.
