ALEXANDER BROWN ROBERTSON, whose death occurred in Carapichaima, Trinidad on 10th November 1939, spent practically the whole of his professional career overseas in the sugar industry. He was educated at Kilmarnock Academy, where he also received his technical education, and at Glasgow Technical College, and served his apprenticeship first with Messrs. Grant Ritchie and Company, of Kilmarnock from 1901 to 1904, and then with the Harvey Engineering Company, Glasgow, until 1906.
In 1907 he accepted an appointment in Jamaica as chief engineer to the Belleisle Estate Company, Ltd., where he had full charge of the erection and running of several sugar factories. On returning to Scotland in 1910 he was employed for a short time as draughtsman by the Harvey Engineering Company. He then became chief engineer for the Sena Sugar Estates, Ltd., Portuguese East Africa, and held this position from 1911 to 1918.
Later he returned to Jamaica, and after holding an appointment for eleven months with Messrs. Lindo Bros., he proceeded to Trinidad in 1920 as chief engineer to the Waterloo Sugar Factory (Waterloo Estates, Ltd.), and remained in that position until the property was acquired by Messrs. Caroni, Ltd., in 1937.
He became superintendent engineer to the latter firm and held that position at the time of his death. Mr. Robertson was elected a Member of the Institution in 1922.
