Adrian Victor Kilburn was born in 1913.

He studied at Leeds University and obtained a B.Sc. He received practical training at Humber, Ltd., Coventry, the Blackburn Aircraft Co., and D. Napier and Son during the summer vacations.

In 1936 he joined Aero Engines, Ltd., and worked on stress calculations and engine testing.

The following year he became aero-engine designer with Rolls-Royce, Ltd., and remained with the firm until the time of his death in September, 1942, at the age of 30.

He was elected a Graduate in 1938.
