Abdel Aziz Ahmed, DSc, PhD who was born On 13 November, 1886, died on 9 March, 1967. Egyptian by birth, he studied civil engineering at Giza Engineering School from 1907-11, then took electrical engineering at Birmingham University, running the whole gamut of degrees-BSc(Eng) in 1914, MSc(Eng) a year later, PhD in 1923 and in 1924 receiving his DSc.....
With Dr Ahmed in the Electrical and Mechanical Department at the Ministry were the well-known Egyptian engineers Mustapha Fathy and Sayed Abdul Gawad. Realizing the enormous power potential of the stored water of the Aswan Dam, the three of them made plans as early as 1932 to harness this for a giant hydro-electric project, though aware that power generation must be subordinated to the purpose for which the Aswan Dam was originally built, i.e. irrigation, and that no provision had been made for installing generating sets on the site. The Government took no action until after World War 11. but in 1945 it set up a Hydro-Electric Power Commission for Egypt under the Presidency of Dr Ahmed.....
In 1952 and 1953 he served the United Nations on a Technical Mission in Libya, where he carried out a detailed survey of the industrial and agricultural potential of the country and ways to develop it. He retired in 1963.....
