ARC Concrete
Late 1920s: the Abingdon Brick and Tile Co developed a Cotswold stone-finish concrete roofing tile as a cheaper, lighter and durable alternative to natural stone roofing slates.
The business was acquired by Cowley Concrete Ltd
Late 1960s: factory built at Lechlade
1980 A new factory was built at Lechlade.
Manufacture of tiles was carried out by hand and individually finished. This enabled the company to produce a superior tile which weathered quickly and blended into the surroundings. Production was carried out by the Conbloc division at Lechlade in Gloucestershire
Cowley Concrete was acquired by ARC Concrete Ltd.
By 1973 ARC Concrete was one of the main subsidiaries of Amey Roadstone
1981 The concrete roofing tile business formed less than one per cent of ARC Concrete's total business.
