In the early 1890s, Smulders purchased the Renson company in Grâce-Berleur near Liège in Belgium. The company successively bore the names Renson, Renson-Smulders (J. Renson – AF Smulders & Co.), Smulders, and Babcock-Smulders.[3]

Smulders, Grace-Berleur-lez-Chaudronneries A. F. Smulders, Chaudronneries, Liège, Belgium, and installed in a paper mill belonging to the Societe Anonyme des Papeteries de Genval, at Genval, Belgium.[5]. Note: A. F. Smulders, Chaudronneries was a sister company of A. F. Smulders and Co of Schiedam. [6]
