AYLMER AUGUSTUS LIARDET held the important position of general manager of Messrs. Leyland Motors, Ltd., for over twenty years, and had latterly been a director of the firm. He was born in 1879 and served his apprenticeship from 1897 to 1900 with Messrs. Vosper and Company, Ltd., marine engineers, of Portsmouth.

After some experience as draughtsman to Messrs. Bowes, Scott and Western, mining engineers, and also as assistant to the inspector-general of Egyptian railways, he was employed in the London branch of the Desrumaux Water Softening Company, as an erector, and was the firm's representative at the Paris Exhibition of 1900.

He then joined Messrs. Thwaites Brothers, general engineers, of Bradford, Yorkshire, and after a period in the drawing office eventually became assistant works manager and then works manager. He was made general manager in 1915, and a director five years later. On the conclusion of this association, after twenty years' service, in 1923, he took over his managerial duties with Messrs. Leyland Motors and was actively engaged up to the time of his death which occurred on 18th February 1946.

Mr. Liardet had been a Member of the Institution since 1922.
